Learning from Grassroots Innovators

Design that Matters is an innovative course that brings together grassroots innovators, institutions, students and teams in South India to create a collaborative platform that aims to create and deliver sophisticated and accessible solutions to real issues.

The Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, National Innovation Foundation, Indian Institute of Science, Nettur Technical Training Foundation, Karnataka Innovators Association, PRITVI, Bangalore, SEVA, Madurai, Tamil Nadu Innovators Association  other NGO's and Honey Bee Network Partners based in the South can all generate a list of interesting challenges that have a component of preliminary work and thought applied by grassroots innovators who are responding to a real problem.

For example, an architect in Bangalore is trying to develop a rainwater-harvesting product for urban homes in India. Students from institutions in South India can contribute and take this product from concept to a marketable solution with many alternatives thrown in. This process will allow prototypes to be made, tested and refined at no cost to the innovator but with direct benefit to the solution. Teams of students from institutions in Bangalore will collaborate and also post the process of design on the web to be reviewed by peers doing similar courses across the world.

The Workshop

A two day residential workshop has been organized at Bangalore. This workshop aims to:

kick start the design and engineering support to grassroots innovators in South India through a partnership between the Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, Indian Institute of Science, National Innovation Foundation, NTTF School of Post Graduate studies, SEVA & PRITVI.

enable the grassroots innovators to create links with these institutions to help them develop and refine their innovations

create a group in South India drawn from different disciplines to work on this issue and gather challenges to be posed for the Design that Matters course.
